ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), a leading global data centre provider, announced the opening of STT Seoul 1 on 16 June 2026, its first data centre in South Korea.
Developed and operated through a joint venture between STT GDC (60%) and Hyosung Heavy Industries (40%), the facility establishes a strategic foothold for STT GDC in one of Asia’s most advanced digital markets, extending STT GDC’s platform to support customers deploying AI and cloud infrastructure across Northeast Asia.
South Korea is a strategically important market for high-performance digital infrastructure, underpinned by strong enterprise digitalisation and growing demand for compute capacity. The opening of STT Seoul 1 reflects STT GDC’s broader approach to expanding in markets where long-term digital demand, infrastructure readiness, and customer requirements are converging.
“AI infrastructure demand is increasingly concentrating in markets where digital capability, power availability, and customer requirements come together,” said Charles Chulhoy Huh, Country Head, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (Korea). “STT Seoul 1 establishes an important foundation for STT GDC’s presence in Korea, extending a globally consistent platform into a key Northeast Asian market, where customers are scaling increasingly advanced workloads and require infrastructure that is resilient, efficient, and built for long-term growth.”
Hyosung Group Chairman Hyun-Joon Cho said, “Over a decade ago, we recognised the value of big data—often referred to as the ‘oil of the 21st century’—and set out with a firm conviction to build core AI infrastructure in the Seoul metropolitan area, the ‘brain’ of Korea. Today, STT Seoul 1 stands as a timely oasis for advanced IT companies that have long faced infrastructure constraints, and a new milestone marking the future of Korea’s AI ecosystem. Going forward, we will continue to expand our collaboration with STT GDC, not only in Korea but also in shaping the next paradigm of the global AI ecosystem.”
Located in Gasan-dong, Geumcheon-gu, Seoul, STT Seoul 1 comprises approximately 40,000 square metres of gross floor area and supports up to 30MW of IT load, with full commercial operations beginning in June 2026. The facility is designed to support a range of hyperscale and enterprise deployments, including evolving high-density workloads.
The opening ceremony was attended by Bruno Lopez, STT GDC President & Group CEO, Hyun-Joon Cho, Hyosung Group Chairman, Jeehye Park, Member of the National Assembly of Korea, and Singapore’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, His Excellency Wong Kai Jiun, reflecting the importance of digital infrastructure in supporting economic development and cross-border collaboration.
Given that Korea is aiming to become one of the top 3 global leaders in AI, establishing high-quality, efficient data centre infrastructure is a critical national priority,” said Jeehye Park, Member of the National Assembly of Korea. “I look forward to STT Seoul 1 supporting Korea’s journey to becoming a true AI powerhouse by creating a more efficient, professional, and sustainable data centre model.
“The development of digital infrastructure is closely tied to national priorities around sustainability, resilience, and long-term economic competitiveness. As Korea accelerates the growth of its digital and AI-driven economy, it is increasingly important that this expansion is supported by infrastructure that is both high-performing and energy-efficient. Facilities such as STT Seoul 1 contribute to strengthening the foundations of Korea’s digital economy while incorporating design approaches that support operational resilience and responsible resource use. This will be important as we continue to scale advanced technologies in a sustainable and responsible manner.”
“Singapore and South Korea share strong and longstanding ties in trade, technology, and innovation. As both countries continue to advance their digital and AI capabilities, trusted digital infrastructure will play an important role in enabling deeper connectivity and collaboration,” said Singapore’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Wong Kai Jiun. “STT Seoul 1 demonstrates how cross-border collaboration can support the development of resilient digital infrastructure, strengthen regional connectivity, and create new foundations for innovation and growth.”
Designed for high availability and operational resilience
Ahead of its launch, STT Seoul 1 has achieved the Tier III Certification of Design Documents (TCDD) from Uptime Institute, validating a design approach that supports high availability through concurrent maintainability. The certification provides early proof of the engineering and design discipline that underpins the facility.
STT Seoul 1 has been built with a strong focus on uninterrupted operations and energy efficiency from the design stage. The facility features dual 22.9kV power feeds with a redundant configuration, together with a distributed redundant (DR) UPS system and backup generators capable of operating for up to 24 hours without refuelling, enhancing operational resilience in emergencies.
Its cooling system supports a design PUE of below 1.3 and is complemented by thermal energy storage (TES) to enable stable and continuous cooling. STT Seoul 1 also incorporates a seven-layer physical security framework, including intelligent video analytics and biometric authentication, and has achieved LEED Gold certification, reflecting a focus on efficient, high-performance infrastructure. These features position STT Seoul 1 to support customers requiring resilient, efficient infrastructure for mission-critical cloud and AI deployments, while reinforcing STT GDC’s ability to bring consistent engineering and operating standards into new markets.
Built through local partnership, backed by global expertise
Established in 2021, the joint venture between Hyosung Heavy Industries and STT GDC combines STT GDC’s global data centre platform and operating expertise with Hyosung’s local market capabilities, supporting the development of infrastructure aligned with both international standards and local requirements.
STT GDC operates a global portfolio of data centres across key markets, including Singapore, the United Kingdom, Germany, India, Italy, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Korea. With the opening of STT Seoul 1, STT GDC aims to support the continued development of Korea’s digital economy as part of STT GDC’s broader platform.
