JB–Singapore RTS Link project named finalist in 2023 Going Digital Awards; event to be held in Singapore in Oct

AECOM Perunding Sdn Bhd has been named a finalist in the Going Digital Awards in Infrastructure 2023 (under the Rail and Transit category) for the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System Link project, located in Malaysia and Singapore.

The Year in Infrastructure (YII) and Going Digital Awards 2023, hosted by Bentley Systems, will take place at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from 11 to 12 October. The awards winners will be announced on the second day of the event.

In total, there are 36 finalists representing 12 award categories. They have been selected from over 300 nominations submitted by 235 organisations from 51 countries.

Cross-border rail linking Malaysia and Singapore

The Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is a cross-border project that will connect Johor Bahru in Malaysia with Woodlands, Singapore. Featuring stations in both countries, each with customs, immigration and quarantine facilities, the RTS will ease traffic congestion by reducing the number of cars using the Johor-Singapore Causeway, providing greener transportation for around 10,000 passengers per hour.

AECOM is delivering the RTS Link and faced several challenges on this rail project spanning two countries. To facilitate collaborative workflows and establish optimal project delivery, the team wanted to adopt a digital twin approach.

Leveraging Bentley’s integrated digital modelling and analysis applications, AECOM established a connected data environment through ProjectWise to optimise planning, design and construction. The team developed a reality mesh from drone-captured images, accelerating survey and processing fivefold.

Applying Bentley software automated workflows, ensured structural integrity and saved 50% in drafting time. The digital twin solution provided an accurate, holistic view of the cross-border rail project, meeting technical requirements for both countries while reducing rework.

To win the award, AECOM will compete against two other finalists in the Rail and Transit category, which include: IDOM – Value Engineering Stage for Detailed Design & Supervision of the Rail Baltica Project, in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania; and Italferr SpA – New High Speed Line Salerno – Reggio Calabria, in Battipaglia, Campania, Italy.

Gathering of infrastructure professionals

This annual awards programme honours the extraordinary work of Bentley software users advancing infrastructure design, construction and operations throughout the world. Twelve independent jury panels selected the 36 finalists.

At the event, representatives from the finalists’ organisations will present their projects to the panel of independent judges to determine the winners and meet with global press and industry executives.

Chris Bradshaw, Bentley Systems’ chief marketing officer, said, “We are so excited to be back in Singapore to present the Going Digital Awards finalists in front of our users and those attending virtually, as well as invited press and analysts at the 2023 Year in Infrastructure and Going Digital Awards event.

“These projects reflect how organisations have improved their workflows by embracing digital technologies to maximise efficiency and cost savings. I congratulate the finalists for advancing infrastructure intelligence by adopting Bentley Infrastructure Cloud, iTwin Platform and products, and Bentley Open Applications, and I wish them success on their future projects.”
